Re: [ferret_users] Global Relief -- GRD Files

Hi Ansley,

thank you. Good to know about that.

Kind regards,
Szymon

Hi all,
That sounds like a good solution, to rename the variable so you can always use it easily.  If you don't have control over the file, say if the dataset were a remote URL you wouldn't be able to do that, so another means of handling this with Ferret is to rename a variable after opening a file, just for the Ferret session.  This would look like this:
yes? use "http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/thredds/dodsC/data/PMEL/smith_sandwell_topo_v8_2.nc"
yes? sh dat
     currently SET data sets:
    1> http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/thredds/dodsC/data/PMEL/smith_sandwell_topo_v8_2.nc  (default)

 name     title                             I         J         K         L
 ROSE     Topography and Bathymetry (  81  1:10800   1:6336    ...       ...

yes? set var/name=relief rose
yes? sh dat
     currently SET data sets:
    1> http://ferret.pmel.noaa.gov/thredds/dodsC/data/PMEL/smith_sandwell_topo_v8_2.nc  (default)

 name     title                             I         J         K         L
 RELIEF   Topography and Bathymetry (  81  1:10800   1:6336    ...       ...

and througout the session, Ferret would act as if the name of the variable in the dataset were RELIEF.  All of the attributes remain as they were in the original dataset.

Hi,
thank you all for your suggestions.
Now, I am using this data.
shade 'Z' performs well but I decided to rename this variable.

Kind regards,
Szymon Roziewski

It worked here but with

shade 'Z'

because Z is the variable and z is the title.

 1> ./ETOPO1_Bed_g_gmt4.grd  (default)

 Z        z                                1:21601   1:10801   ...       ...
