Does ferret complain when plotting, or when reading the file with the
"use" statement?  To plot variables with a reserved name such as x, y,
z, or t, try doing

shade 'z'

with single quotes.  If that won't work for this file, follow Martin's
advice and rename the variables with ncrename.
