What happens when you try this?  It should work,and the examples I tried seem to work fine:

yes? use etopo60
yes? let var1 =  abs(rose[j=45])
yes? let var2 =  abs(rose[j=123]/14)
yes? let var3 =  abs(rose[j=145]*12)
yes? plot/vlog var1,var2, var3
