[ferret_users] 64-bit binary for Suse linux 9.3?

Hi,
I am trying to install Ferret 6.0 at a Suse Linux machine.
The system version is 9.3, or Kernel
2.6.11.4-21.15-smp #1 SMP Tue Nov 28 13:39:58 UTC 2006 x86_64

Not really old.

The statically linked 5.81 version (64-bit) runs. Unfortunatley
there is no statically linked 64-bit binary of version 6.0, but I would
like to use the new features of attribute handling and have
large files > 2G. So I tried the dynamic version.

According to the ferret web pages it should run with

Ferret v6.0
Ferret built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 4 (Nahant Update 3), with g77/gcc v3.2.2

My installed gcc is gcc-c++-3.3.5-5.x86_64.rpm,
hence later than the required version.

Anyway, ferret fails with
ferret_v600: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

which is correct, the lib is missing.

I tried to install the corresponding rpm, but this fails with errors like
libc.so.6 is needed by libstdc++-mainline-4.0.2_20050720-0.1

I should not follow this way because the system integrity
is in danger.

In the web I find, that libstdc++.so.6 is related to gcc-4.x,
which in turn cannot be installed easily.

Any help, how to proceed would be very welcome.

Many thanks,
Martin Schmidt
