I've tried your script (thanks!), it uses the same commands that I
used to use in my own script. Unfortunately the resulting plots
confirm my suspicion: either ferret v5.8 or some other software on my
system is messing up. The plots are all in the middle of an
approximate A4 sheet, so the cropping (by ps2epsi) went wrong.

I'll try ferret 5.8 at home (still using 5.7 there) to find out if the
problem is in gks2mps, ferret or ps2epsi.
