variance calculation

Hello Ferret Users,

Sorry I am repeating this question again, becase I could not get
any reply. Here I am trying to short the question.

I do not fully understand how ferret calcuttes the variance(uncertainity).

I have zonal mean time series(monthly) of one year CO2 concentration 
satellite data.I want to calculate the variance of the zonal mean CO2.

Kindly help me how to do it and what ferret does.mathmatically I want
to understand ferret way.
