Re: How to start with

Hi Sriram,
            Welcome to Ferret users community. It is fairly easy to start with
Ferret. Ferret comes with a good documentation and many demo files to make the
learning processes as easy as possible.

 You can see the demo files in ferret/examples dir. You can locate the ferret
dir by ==> [sriram@machine]$ which ferret . To run the demo files, start ferret
and use "GO" command to run the scripts(text file containing ferret commands)
in ferret/examples (no need to specify the path, ferret_paths will take care
of it.)

   [sriram@machine]$ ferret
           NOAA/PMEL TMAP
           FERRET v5.80
           Linux(g77) 2.4.20 - 01/03/05
           18-Jan-05 17:07

   yes? go file_reading_demo.jnl

 You can see the description and details about the commands used to perform the
calculation or delivering the plot on the terminal, keep reading it. When
finished with the demo, type q/quit/exit/e to come out of ferret. These are
the demo files that you may find most usefull:

   open & read ascii  file ==> file_reading_demo.jnl
               binary   "  ==> binary_read_demo.jnl

   advanced usage          ==> levitus_demo.jnl
                           ==> multi_variable_demo.jnl
                           ==> regridding_demo.jnl
                           ==> statistics_demo.jnl
                           ==> vector_demo.jnl
                           ==> viewports_demo.jnl

 You can skip the jnl extention in the demofile name, like

            yes? go file_reading_demo

 NetCDF file can be opened with use or set data command

          yes? use levitus_climatology.cdf
          yes? set data levitus_climatology.cdf

 User manual, FAQ and mail archive serves as the best places to search for some
details about a ferret command or method. If that doesn't solve your problem
please do send mails to the mailing list with all neccessary details of your
problem.
