Re: ferret.exe:*** Couldn't reserve space for cygwin's heap
Scott was correct, clicking on Windows XP v5.51 actually downloads
v.5.53.
It's working fine now that I downloaded v5.51 (follow the "Previous
versions" link).
Note to webpage designer:
This is very misleading, and the warning in red type about needing to
install v.5.51 is not enough of a fix to your webpage layout.

Hi Scott
Thanks for your reply.
Well, I think I am installing v. 5.51!
I went to:
http://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/Ferret/Downloads/ferret_downloads.html
clicked on:
Windows XP v5.51
(there is no other option under Windows XP). Of course I can't confirm
this because I can't run ferret to check the version.

PS it seems to me that the documentation "
Ferret Installation and Update Guide
Version 5.40 -- Win32
is for win95 and win98, which makes it difficult. Furthermore, I
can't find a README file that is referred to.
Going out on a limb, it seems the error message is similar to
the:
Possible Win95/98 and
Windows ME Problems
- Error: Out of Environment
Space
- This error occurs when a DOS window
attempts to start up the bash shell in order to run Ferret.
However, the solution given doesn't apply to XP because there is no
memory tab on the icon properties. Tracing back to the Microsoft help
revealed that this was one of two possible solutions. However, the other
solution, adding to config.sys the line
- SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:4096 /P
didn't help either.
In short, I'm at the end of my computer hacking rope!

If you are installing ferret on
a Win32 machine, install version 5.51
instead of the latest version. This is a known issue with the
latest
version.
