ERROR: Cannot open pipe

I am running FERRET v5.53  IRIX 6.5 - 10/06/03 and come accross a strange
error trying to use Let command

set memory/size=400
use hadsst_1949t200206_newfix.nc
let xs="0:360"
ERROR: Cannot open pipe

Can anybody give me a hint what is going on there?
