wind field eof

Hi Ferreters

I have one dataset with field components (U and V), and I would like to 
perform EOF with them.

One way would be using imaginary complex form for wind filed (e.g. U + i 
V), and second one is combining them into one variable only.

Anyone know how to create imaginary numbers on ferret, or give me one clue 
to perform this kind of EOF with wind field ?
