Just for those who might find mkdes useful, mkdes can be downloaded from
http://www.ocgy.ubc.ca/~tang/softwares/mkdes/mkdes.html

In our LAS server
http://eyre.jpl.nasa.gov/las/main.pl?cookieCheck=1
we use mkdes to generate all the descriptor files.
