If you are using Linux, as I assume you are, then use the attached file,
linuxize_descriptors, to change the des file. This shell script provided by
the Ferret developers replaces the `$' in the descriptor file with `\' and
`&'. (If you are not using Linux, then I am not suer what the problem is.)
