Hi Juliette,
As Mark said you can do this with gksm2ps.  If you've made a
Ferret metafile, you can convert this to postscript, or send the plot
directly to a printer, with the Unix command Fprint.   Fprint has a
-p option, to set the page orientation to portrait.
