When I try the example you give me, I find I can't do, this is because ferret can't create different filenames changing with  time'L'. The following is the message after input REPEAT/L=1:12 (LIST/FORMAT=(F9.2)/FILE=time`L`.dat sst). How to replace 'l' in filename time'l'.dat. Thank you.

! -> repeat:l=1
listing to file time'l'.dat
! ->repeat l=2
**error: invalid command: /clobber not specified and file exists: time'l'.dat
list/format=(f9.2)/file=time'l'.dat sst
command file, command group, or repeat execution aborted

Here's an example, which uses the L coordinate in the name of the files:

     yes? USE coads_climatology
     yes? SET REGION/X=180:200/Y=0
     yes? REPEAT/L=1:12 (LIST/FORMAT=(F9.2)/FILE=time`L`.dat sst)
