Dear Glenn,
I found it is easier to generate gif files and use either mpeg_encode or
fli animations. you have to convert gif files in to ppm files using some
conversion utilities such as netpbm 
for li and flc animations please see this page

mpeg_encode you can get from sevaral sites on the net
