2D varying z-axis

Hi Ferreters,

normally a NetCDF file has one general z-axis. Now, if one has a model
with variable surface (free surface) or bottom (partial filled cells)
one would need this information included for correct integrations and
plotting. My question:

Is is possible to specify a horizontal varying vertical thickness, say a
dz(i,j,k), in a NetCDF file?

So, how do all the people with free surface models calculate integral
quantities of their model fields?

Thanks a lot.
