FOCI
conducts biology surveys on a fixed grid. Bongo tows sieve plankton,
including fish larvae, from the water. The contents are sorted, identified
and counted. Pollock larvae are often found in patches. In
some years, for example 1992, larvae were more abundant that in other years
such as 1998. The annual late larval pollock survey is an important
component of FOCI's recruitment forecast.
