Calculating distance

Your first job is to determine the exact location of the earthquakes so we know where to take the ship and where to make our first dive with ROPOS. Thousands of earthquakes were detected, but we will just locate the one that was the largest.

To do that, we must calculate the distance of the event from each hydrophone. The distance from each hydrophone to the earthquake's epicenter is determined by multiplying the time in seconds that the sound travels by its speed underwater:

Distance = Time X Speed

In this case, we can use a sound speed of 1.5 kilometers per second.
