Required Items for all scientists planning to sail
  1. NOAA Heath Services Questionnaire must be filled out and submitted before April 1st. This includes proof of a TB test.
The NHSQ can be obtained from the NOAA website here: http://www.corporateservices.noaa.gov/~noaaforms/eforms/nf57-10-01.pdf
The NOAA Health Services Questionnaire must be completed four weeks prior to the start of our cruise by each participating scientist.
The completed form should be sent to the Regional Director of Health Services at Marine Operations Center.
The participant can mail, fax, or scan the form into an email using the contact information below.
Please contact MOC Health Services with any questions regarding eligibility or completion of the NHSQ.
Be sure to include proof of tuberculosis (TB) testing, sign and date the form, and indicate the ship or ships the participant will be sailing on.
The participant will receive an email notice when medically cleared to sail if a legible email address is provided on the NHSQ.

  3. Please send Dana an inventory of your hazardous material and proposed spill control procedures.
If you don't see it here, we don't have it: Latest Hazardous Material Inventory Excel Spreadsheet
The ship will require an inventory before we sail and make sure we take everything off at the end. They also will want Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for each item we bring on board. We also need to bring spill control materials in the unlikely event we spill some of these. Finally, if you have any safety and/or spill response training, please share the class name and date of instruction with Dana.

  4. Please also send your emergency contact info into Francisco: francisco.fuenmayor at noaa.gov
Prior to departure, the Chief Scientist must provide an electronic listing of emergency contacts to the Executive Officer for all members of the scientific party, with the following information: contact name, address, relationship to member, and telephone number.

  5. NOAA Espionage Briefing
Yes, all of you who are sailing need to read this document: NOAA Espionage Briefing, which opens in new browser window
Please let Francisco know when you have read it. Thanks.
    Other Items for all scientists.
  1. Food allergies? Restrictions? Other?
Any special dietary restrictions? Vegetarian? Vegan? Other? Food allergies or intolerances? If you need to bring something for your dietary intake, do you require a refrigerator or freezer for your food? If so, how much space would you need.
  2. Open toed footwear restrictions and steel toed boot requirements.
Wearing open-toed footwear or shoes that do not completely enclose the foot (such as sandals or clogs) outside of private berthing areas is not permitted. Steel-toed shoes are required to participate in any work dealing with suspended loads, including CTD deployments and recovery. The ship does not provide steel-toed boots. Hard hats are also required when working with suspended loads. Work vests are required when working near open railings and during small boat launch and recovery operations. Hard hats and work vests will be provided by the ship when required.
  3. Computer security and virus protection.
Any computer that will be hooked into the ship's network must comply with the NMAO Fleet IT Security Policy 1.1 (November 4, 2005) prior to establishing a direct connection to the NOAA WAN. Requirements include, but are not limited to:
    1. Installation of the latest virus definition (.DAT) file on all systems and performance of a virus scan on each system.
    2. Installation of the latest critical operating system security patches.
    3. No external public Internet Service Provider (ISP) connections.
Completion of these requirements prior to boarding the ship is required. Non-NOAA personnel using the ship's computers or connecting their own computers to the ship's network must complete NOAA's IT Security Awareness Course within three days of embarking.
  4. Fridge/Freezer
The Brown has 1 walk in freezer and 1 walk in refrigerator.
There are no other scientific use refrigerators or freezers on the ship.
When required, the refrigerator is kept around 40°F and,
the freezer at -10°F. Both are about 63 sq ft.
The shelving is 3 tiered around the 3 sides of the space.

Make sure you fill out the "lab and water budget survey" tab on this google doc if you plan to use a climate controlled space - whether it be the ships or your own.

  5. Loading in San Diego
If you intend to ship anything to San Diego for the cruise, please let Dana know any and all information about the shipment.
Weights, dimensions, hazmat? Tracking number? Can it sit outside in the sun? Needs to be kept temperature controlled? etc....
This would be the address to use for these shipments:

Ronald H Brown, attn: Your name
    Pass and ID Office
    3436 Harbor Drive
    San Diego, CA 92136

Deliveries will come straight to the ship. Monday 02 MAY would be the first day the ship can accept a delivery.
Map of the San Diego base: All commercial traffic needs to enter at gate 7.
The Brown will be on pier 4.
Ops officer (Brian Elliot: brian.e.elliot at noaa.gov) can be the point of contact for shipments - his cell is 262-909-0796.
Please have the driver call Brian when they are close and we will ensure we are ready for the delivery.
