Iceberg Grounding (Train)

train spectrogramThis sound was recorded on March 4, 1997 on the eastern equatorial Pacific autonomous hydrophone array. The sound is quasi steady at around 32-35 Hz and, based on the arrival azimuth, was most likely generated by a very large iceberg grounded in the Ross Sea, near Cape Adare. The sound is generated as the iceberg is slowly moving and dragging its keel on the seafloor.
