Course description
After learning a brief history and the principles of Sonar, you will make your own hydrophone and test it at the OSU pier at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop PC or tape recorder so that they can record the sounds they hear inside Yaquina Bay. Using a PC and a spectrogram display, you will learn how scientists analyze the sounds generated by various mechanisms including earthquakes and marine mammals through an interactive audiovisual lecture.

Schedule
Day 1 (Haru Matsumoto, Matt Fowler, Joe Haxel)
10:00AM- Brief history and principles of Sonar (0.5hr).
10:30AM- Introduction to acoustic transducers (e.g., acoustic laser and Piezo hydrophones and a few other types - 0.5 hr).
11:00AM-Students make their own simple hydrophones in the classroom (1 hr).
