The African, Asian, and Australian monsoons recur with marked variability leading to periods of severe drought and flooding. RAMA will improve description, understanding, and prediction of these monsoons, which affect one third of the world's population.

Embedded in the monsoons are:

  • Severe weather events and cyclones

  • The intraseasonal (30-60 day) Madden-Julian Oscillation

  • The Indian Ocean Dipole
  • Decadal variability and warming trends

  • Energetic changes in ocean circulation

    The monsoons also have a profound effect on ocean biogeochemistry and marine ecosystems.
