Anonymous FTP Access to TAO/NOPP Data

NOPP data are available on-line from the NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) via anonymous FTP.

Meteorological data from the NOPP buoy are available in an ascii format. The data are hourly values and are uploaded every 3 hours beginning at 00:30 GMT.

Each file contains a header line, and a line of data. File names correspond to end of the averaging interval and have the form npYYYYJJJHH.dat, where YYYY = year, JJJ = day of year, and HH = hour.

Temperature data are in Celsius, wind speeds in meters/second, and barometric pressure in millibars.

These data can be viewed via your Web browser.

To gain access to these directories via a terminal session, enter the following commands:

ftp ftp.pmel.noaa.gov

or if that fails

ftp 161.55.168.6

Login as anonymous and use your internet mail address as password. Change directories to one of the above, for example,

cd OCRD/goes

ls

This will list the available files in that directory. When you locate the files you want, enter

get filename

to copy a single file or

prompt off
mget *string*.*

to copy all files with "string" in their names.

When you finish enter

bye

which will terminate the FTP session.

If you GET any of these data, please notify "atlasrt@noaa.gov" so that we can inform you of any modifications to the data sets. Also, please provide a 1-2 line description of your intended use of the data, so that we can advise you of other TAO analysis projects underway on related topics.

If you use these data in publications, please acknowledge the TAO Project Office of NOAA/PMEL. Also, we would appreciate receiving a preprint and/or reprint of publications utilizing the data for inclusion in the TAO bibliography. Relevant publications should be sent to:
