On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan shaking the entire country and sending a massive tsunami wave across the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake noise was captured by a hydrophone, an underwater microphone, located 900 miles away from the epicenter in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The Vents program at Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory recorded the event using the U.S. Navy's Sound Surveillance System or SOSUS. You will hear a portion of the earthquake that has been sped up 16 times. [ROAR OF EARTHQUAKE RECORDED BY HYDROPHONE]
