I guess the method described in Section "2.4 BINARY DATA" of the
Ferret manual

should work.  Basically,

  yes? file/var=u,v/. . . .

is the recipe for a dataset with the u,v,u,v,... order,
I think.  I myself haven't had the experience of reading
binary data and so I may be missing something.
