Hello,
	As an addendum to Bill's comment, Andrew Wittenberg has made a 
nice perl script available which will automatically generate a descriptor 
file.  It can be found at;

http://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/~atw/ferret/make_des

It may save you a good deal of time in writing the descriptor file.
