flipping depth coordinates

I have some datasets which are naturally in right-handed coodinates - that is, z is positive upwards (e.g. bottom of the ocean at -1000m, surface at 0m, tropopause at 1000m). I want to use ferret to convert these to vis5d format, but that vis5d_write utility assumes everything is in "depth" coordinates (even if you never specified them as such), with increasing values of z as you go deeper in the ocean. Does anyon know a way to disable this convention, so my worlds won't get turned upside down? Alternatively, is there a simple way to "flip" a z axis in ferret, without having to write it out/read it in slice by slice?

Thanks for any tips.
