Re: grib to netcdf

GrADS can read grib data, provided you have a proper
descriptor file for it. Try Wesley Ebisuzaki's grib2ctl
program (http://wesley.wwb.noaa.gov/grib2ctl.html). If that
doesn't work, you can email me offline for help with
generating a GrADS descriptor file. Once you have GrADS
reading your grib data, you can call the grads script
"lats4d" to write out a netcdf file. The lats4d script is
available from the GrADS script library
(http://www.iges.org/grads/gadoc/library.html). You can also
use Wesley's wgrib program
(http://wesley.wwb.noaa.gov/wgrib.html) to extract flat
binary data from the grib file.

If it's grib data from NCEP, then it may already be behind a
GDS so you can open it easily with Ferret. A couple of
servers to try are:
  http://cola8.iges.org:9191/dods/
  http://nomad2.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/

These two servers are continuously updated with the latest
forecast data. For example:
yes? use "http://cola8.iges.org:9191/dods/gfs/gfs2003031100";
yes? use
"http://nomad2.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/eta/eta20030311/eta_00z";
