character data reading

Dear Sir

I have ascii data file(test.txt) and I would like to input it.
(test.txt)
id             sn        lon   lat  date       depth temperature
wod0000001     1234567   99.5  6.7  3/8/1956   0     27.6   
woe0000002     1234568   97.9  9.2 11/7/1972  10     29.7

file /variable="dumy,dumy1,lon,lat,dumy2,depth,tem" test.txt

But error says "character device ..."
I quess that means taht we can not get(read) character data by this way.

Could you tell me how to read the character data from ascii file?
