KEO is 340 nautical miles SE of Tokyo Japan. The background image shows the sea surface temperatures on Feb 15, 2011 and is a synthesis of observations and computed temperatures. The warm Kuroshio Current flows northward along the Japanese coast and heads eastward between 32 and 35 degrees N where it meanders and forms eddies as the Kuroshio Extension Current. KEO is located just south of the boundary between warm subtropical waters and much colder waters to the north.
