Proceedings  of the Planning Workshop for
Southeast Bering Sea Carrying Capacity

Richard Strickland, Rapporteur

On November 28-30, 1995, in Seattle, Washington, approximately 80 scientists, by public invitation, met to discuss research priorities and approaches that address issues critical to an examination of the southeastern Bering Sea ecosystem and the role of walleye pollock within it. Attendees were asked to consider specific scientific and management issues.

The agenda provided two basic fora for discussions. On the first morning participants met in a plenary session at which several speakers presented information on the Coastal Ocean Program, the Bering Sea ecosystem, and fisheries management. This portion of the workshop is summarized by the Plenary Report.

During the afternoon of the first day and all of the second day, participants divided into breakout groups to discuss scientific and management issues in the context of four scientific approaches: monitoring, retrospective analysis, process studies, and modeling. On the morning of the third day the workshop reassembled in plenary session to hear and discuss reports from the breakout sessions. Proceedings of the sessions and reporting are summarized in the Breakout Report.
