A Planning Workshop
for
Southeast Bering Sea Carrying Capacity
Planning Workshop for Southeast Bering Sea Carrying Capacity, a NOAA Coastal Ocean Program Regional Ecosystem Study administered by the University of Alaska, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, and Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, 28-30 November 1995, Seattle, Washington.
The University of Alaska and NOAA will host a three-day workshop at the Battelle Seattle Conference Center to discuss:
- research priorities for understanding the role of pollock in the southeastern Bering Sea shelf ecosystem
- factors that influence recruitment variability.
The workshop will consider four scientific approaches:
- Retrospective Analysis:
Retrospective analyses will combine fisheries, oceanographic and other biological and physical data sets with regionally explicit analyses.
- Monitoring:
Monitoring will investigate interannual variability of the environment in the several biophysical domains.
- Process Studies:
Process studies attempt to quantify the relation between larval and juvenile pollock and their environment and their role in the ecosystem.
- Modeling:
Modeling will attempt to coordinate simulations that encompass lower trophic level models, circulation models, and existing fisheries models.
Scientists with knowledge of the Bering Sea or those processes affecting its ecosystem who will contribute to this workshop are invited to attend. Limited funding is available for travel expenses.
