CRUISE OBJECTIVES

1) To conduct 13 CTD casts in the Bering Sea as part of a monitoring study by NOAA.

2) To assess the distribution and abundance of larval pollock from Unimak Island to Kenai Peninsula in the western Gulf of Alaska. A portion of this survey was part of an Adaptive Sampling Survey conducted in the exit region of Shelikof Strait in conjunction with the NOAA ship Miller Freeman.

3) To collect larval pollock from different regions for a study of otolith chemistry.

CRUISE SUMMARY
  1. Wecoma departed Dutch Harbor 21 June at 10:00 ADT. Thirteen CTD casts were successfully accomplished in the Bering Sea (Table 1, Figure 1).
  2. Plankton samples were collected at 202 stations in the GOA from Pavlov Bay to Montague Strait, near Prince William Sound, during 24 May to 5 June (Table 1 and 2). The gear used was a 60 cm bongo net equipped with 505 micron mesh net. Depth was determined using a SeaCat which also furnished at-depth temperature and salinity data.

    Coverage of the shelf was most extensive between the Shumagin Islands and Kodiak Island, which is where larval pollock were most abundant (Figure 2 and 3). Many of these samples were part of the Adaptive Sampling Survey that was conducted in the exit region of Shelikof Strait. The Adaptive Sampling Survey was conducted in conjunction with the Miller Freeman but Figure 2 shows only the 75 Adaptive stations occupied by the Wecoma. Twenty-nine of these were the primary "A" stations, and 46 were the secondary "B" and tertiary "C" stations. Five stations along Line 155 (gx155 through hf155), which runs through the Semidi Islands, were sampled once as part of the Adaptive Pre-Survey and again as part of the Adaptive Sampling Survey, catches at these stations during the pre-survey are not included in Figure 2. It is noteworthy that around the primary grid station gv 163 the secondary station B1 and the tertiary station C1 were not occupied because they were in non-navigable areas. In addition, the tertiary station gv 167 C4 was erroneously occupied. More time was spent in this area than initially anticipated due to about two days lost to bad weather.

    The SeaCat was damaged shortly after leaving the Shelikof area during the first tow at station 152. Damage to the temperature and salinity sensors was evident from comparisons between SeaCat and CTD data. The depth sensor does not appear to have been damaged judging by wire out and net depth readings. Thus, the temperature and salinity data collected along the Gulf-side of Kodiak Island and to the northeast should be considered suspect.

    Many of the predetermined stations along the Gulf-side of Kodiak Island, including three stations in Ugak Bay, were not sampled to regain lost time. The one sample from near the head of Kiliuda Bay indicated an anoxic layer along the bottom of the inner basin. Seven new stations were added in Blying Sound and Montague Strait with the hope of collecting larvae from the spawning that takes place in or near Prince William Sound. However, larvae were rarely encountered at any stations northeast of Shelikof Strait. The few larvae that were collected were large (about 10-15 mm) relative to those from Shelikof Strait some of which were still yolk-sac larvae.

  4. A total of 208 pollock larvae were collected for Dr. Kevin Bailey’s otolith chemistry study. These larvae were from four stations in the Bering Sea (138 larvae) and two stations in the GOA (Pavlov Bay, 69 larvae) (Table 1, Figure 1). In Shelikof Strait, sampling for this study was conducted aboard the Miller Freeman. Only one individual from the central GOA west of Prince William Sound was frozen for otolith chemistry.
