• The Cooperative Institute of Arctic Research (CIFAR) has awarded grants for Steller sea lion research.  Jim Overland is co-investigator with Don Percival (UW) to compare various regime shift models and upwelling indices at the north end of the Gulf of Alaska.  No other FOCI proposals were funded.

• At this stage, the FY 2002 budget earmarks $40.2 M for Steller sea lion research.  It has not yet been determined how this money will be distributed if it is realized.

 
• All but five of the 24 papers submitted for the special journal issue on the Bering Sea have received initial reviews, and some have already been accepted.  Authors are urged to complete revisions of their manuscripts as soon as possible.

• Phyllis Stabeno cooperated with Mike Davis, AFSC/FOCI in Newport, on determining the effects of turbidity on feeding of first-year pollock.  Phyllis supplied light data from periods with and without coccolithophorid blooms.

• Personnel update:  Carol Ladd is a National Research Council post-doctoral scientist working with PMEL/FOCI.  She will examine oceanic response to atmospheric climate variability in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.

2001 FIELD SEASON

• Steve Hare, International Pacific Halibut Commission, has used a FOCI CTD to sample a grid of 200 stations in the Gulf of Alaska.  Phyllis Stabeno has looked at that the data from this CTD.  The temperature readings look good, but some salinity data are questionable.  Phyllis will work with Steve to improve instrumentation and technique.  PMEL will process this data.

• Sarah Hinckley requested help from PMEL to visualize the output of individual-based Steller sea lion models she has developed.

• Bering Sea moorings 2 and 4 are only funded through the end of FY 2001.

The next FOCI PI meeting will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 10 May 2001, in the AFSC Director's Conference Room (4/2143). Please submit to Allen Macklin, no later than the day before the meeting, agenda items and fax-ready copies of figures or handouts that you intend to present at the meeting. Alternately, presentation materials may be posted on the WWW or e-mailed to remote participants before the meeting.
