At about
the time that some scientists think the PDO changed from a warm to a cold
or new phase (~1989), the abundance of large jellyfish in the Bering Sea
began to increase dramatically.
In the last several years during
cruises to the southeastern Bering Sea, scientists have had to discard
the contents of plankton tows because they became clogged with jellyfish.
Biological researchers are looking
at ecosystem-wide reasons for and repercussions of this explosion in the
medusae population. Do young pollock benefit from association with
jellyfish? |
