Drifters

The following items pertain to free-floating Drifters drogued at 40 meters whose positions are tracked via satellite. The first 4 items are movies of all drifters deployed in a year during research cruises. Each movie segment is 5 days long, and segments are plotted over time on bathymetry maps. Satellite position information is transmitted daily, and movies are regularly updated. The Historical Deployments are multiple drifters tracked during designated years. Argo Drifters are regularly updated plots of individual drifter buoys in the current year. *The movies may take some time to load into your browser.* An Argo float is programmed to sit at 1000 db pressure for ten days, then ascend to the surface collecting pressure, temperature, and salinity data on the way up. The float remains for less than half a day at the surface, transmitting the profile data back to NOAA/PMEL via satellite. It then descends back to 1000 db to wait for the next 10-day-cycle ascent. drifter diagram
