In 2004, the CO2 group at PMEL began deploying underway pCO2 systems on container ships transiting from Long Beach, California to Australia and New Zealand, allowing us to document the annual and seasonal changes in surface pCO2 all the way across the equatorial Pacific basin.
Underway pCO2 data collected along 18 trans-Pacific transects indicate significant seasonal differences in both the northern and southern hemisphere, with the higher fCO2 values occurring in the respective warm seasons – April through September in the North, and October through March in the South. The seasonal differences are significant in both the northern and southern pacific, but out of phase by 6 months.
