North Pole Weather Data from 2006 Deployment

Weather plot: This plot presents incoming short-wave solar radiation measured by one of the radiometer buoys, along with air temperature, air pressure, and winds measured by the meteorological station. The weather station stopped transmitting on August 8, 2006.

The radiometer is currently frosted over (Dec. 1, 2006). The image below is the last available plot.

Ice-temperature plot: Plots of air, ice, and ocean temperature as measured by Mass Balance buoys developed by CRREL. The buoys at the Borneo site were funded through PMEL.

This year's mass-balance buoy was set out in ice 4m thick. For that reason, the bottom thermistors and the underwater pinger will be in ice, not water, until ice begins to melt.

The plot above the contour plot shows the distance to the snow from the snow pinger, originally 1.3 m above the snow. The decrease in distance on April 30 occurred during a windstorm, but is more abrupt than we would expect. It is possible that the post holding the pinger settled, but that is unlikely because the post was secured by a c-clamp and was well frozen in by that time.
